After the war, the government had to deal with patching up the nation by having the Confederate States come back to the Union.
Reconstruction Reconstruction was the process that the government used to bring the Confederate states back into the Union after the Civil War. Reconstruction had led to the construction of many successes. The Freedmen's Bureau had given aid to black people by establishing an agency providing help to former slaves by setting up schools and hospitals and offering essential items needed for living. Another success is known as the Civil Rights Act. The Civil Rights Act states that all people born in America is a citizen but Andrew Jackson tried to veto it. In the end, it was overturned by 2/3 majority vote from the bicameral legislature. Three amendments were passed during Reconstruction. The 13th Amendment had stated slavery to be abolished in the Confederate States. Despite this, the racism did not stop. The 14th Amendment was created to make the Civil Rights Act more confirmed and stated people who were American-born were citizens and were treated and protected equally. Although, the Southern governments established Black Codes and poll taxes that limited the rights of black people. The 15th Amendment fixed that and stated that citizens will not be stopped from voting. The Panic of 1837 caused an economic recession in America, which made many give their attention more to fixing the economy than Reconstruction, which they were tired of. Reconstruction simply ended because of the Election of 1876 between Rutherford B. Hayes and Samuel J. Tilden. The Compromise of 1877 settled the election with Hayes being elected president. The Compromise removed the troops from the South and made the government have a Democratic Parliament to end all of Reconstruction. Sooner or later, many people had protested about the rights and limits aimed towards them. Lots of people consider to have had invisible chains on their hands referring to unfair treatment given by many. The Civil Rights Movement soon begins as many activists start protesting for themselves.
