Spanish Invasion and The Colombian Exchange Effects
Europeans had little knowledge about the world before 1492. Columbus' original purpose of his journey was to find out about the rest of the world. Columbus left in 1492 instead to find Europe's new world in the Americas. 30 years after he landed back in Europe, Columbus had talked about an empire of gold. It would sound peculiar, but the Europeans still believed him. The natives in the empire of gold are the Aztecs. They had a belief of human sacrifice to the gods. There was a rebellion between other Aztecs during the invasion. General Cortes had decided to lead the exhibition into the empire (now known as Mexico) bringing only 500 men, 16 horses, and 4 cannons while the empire's army (known as the Aztec army) has hundreds of thousands of soldiers. The only difference was the type of warfare traditions. Europe had warfare traditions involving their weapons, defenses, and stealth. That's how Spain was able to conquer the Aztec Empire. After conquering the Aztecs, Spain had become the most powerful country in the world. Seeing how Spain became the most powerful in the world, other countries grew of jealousy. One particular country known as England will be really important on the next paragraph. This created the Colombian Exchange that transferred foods from the Americas and foods, grains, livestock, and diseases from Europe, Asia, and Africa. The disease called small pox was a reason why 90% of the Aztec population had died. Diseases from the Colombian Exchange created the population of America excluding reproduction and wars.
Jamestown, Virginia and Plymouth, Massachusetts
Just like I mentioned in the last paragraph, countries like England grow in jealousy of Spain. England had grown beyond jealousy that they tried making the first English colonies just to become wealthy. Before Jamestown and Plymouth, England colonies were being made in modern-day Cuba. Unfortunately, they did not go so well...until they had found Jamestown, Virginia. It was the first English settlement in the Americas made in 1607. Jamestown started off terribly as the main goal for the English colony was to first search for gold and then grow crops. Most of the people were hard-headed and greedy that they wanted to find gold and not have the job as a farmer. Because of their selfishness, more than half of their population had died even though they didn't find any gold at all. John Smith had tried to make everyone make connections with the Native Americans in hope to find any gold. Other people like pilgrims had stayed in Jamestown. People like Africans had arrived into Jamestown because of labor shortage during 1619. Another thing that had happened was that the first representative government had finally set up a meeting. A ruler named James 1 wanted to convert (change religions) people into Christianity as many English in Jamestown stuck with the English church, but pilgrims were protestant against it and demanded to stick with their religion as they were Separatists. James 1 tried to attack the Separatists for not obeying his order. Both puritans and Separatists were bothered by this, but the pilgrims were able to leave Jamestown to make their own colony based on religion. They leave back to Holland, Germany and then decides to go back to the Americas because of the bad influence the Dutch make towards them. Before going on board the Mayflower. The Mayflower was supposed to go towards Jamestown even if they're infuriated by the governmental rules of religion. Unfortunately, something in the middle of the journey made them land somewhere way north of their original destination. They had landed on November 1620 and named it Plymouth. In 1620, they had signed the Mayflower Compact, an agreement in which they swear to obey laws that are accepted by everyone. This had helped create their own representative government in 1620. They tried setting up the colony, but the pilgrims lost half of their population due to them landing right before the start of winter. The surviving pilgrims had landed on an abandoned Native village and some Native Americans that spoke English had helped with growing crops so the colony would survive.
