The topic of slavery had boiled issues in America. States' Rights, different economic systems in the South and North, and the Election of 1860 had issues because of slavery. The Civil War started because of these issues. The Civil War couldn't have been stopped because of the complications made from the Compromise of 1850 to allow California into the Union. The Kansas-Nebraska Act had allowed popular sovereignty. This allows the people to vote on whether slavery is allowed in the territory. This led to Bleeding Kansas when the two governments in Kansas had clashed and fought to lead to this. The election of 1860 had mentioned the issue of slavery. When Lincoln had won, South Carolina had seceded from the Union after a year of Lincoln being president. South Carolina had seceded from the Union. After South Carolina, other states soon started seceding from the Union before Lincoln's inauguration. The states seceding formed a group of states known as the Confederacy.
